Ten Reasons Why You Should Go Back to School

Going back to school is a daunting prospect for adults thinking about getting their college degree. Here are ten things to consider when deciding if it might be time to go back to school:

Overcome the unemployment rate

The unemployment rate is higher than it has been in several generations. There is a parallel between employment and education-the more educated the potential employee, the more likely they are to be hired, and have job retention. The unemployment rate is twice as staggering between someone holding a bachelor's degree and someone without a high school diploma. Going back to school could mean job security.

Attend college with your current schedule

You do not have to feel like you cannot go back to school because you are already juggling family, a job, and other obligations. With many campus-based programs offering night classes, and so many schools and universities offering distance learning, you can set your education around your schedule, instead of it being the other way around.

Invest in yourself

Let's face it: no matter how you look at it, college is not cheap. Some schools are definitely more expensive than others, but all college graduates must face financial obligations in order to obtain their degree. Unlike most investments though, this investment in yourself is guaranteed to pay off-and is an investment you deserve. College graduates make more money annually and lead happier lifestyles.

Pursue your dream career

Going back to school opens doors to new possibilities. Your dream career is an achievement within sight with a degree leading you in the right direction.

Build a better future for your family.

Family success is reported as parallel to the education of the heads of household. Families with college-educated members are less likely to experience abrupt financial crisis and divorce.

Get a tax write off

Student loans are a source for a tax write off. If you think you cannot pay for college, think again: not only will the government let you acquire loans to go back to school, they will allow you to write those loans off on your income until you are done with school.

Get your employer to pay for you going back to school

Employers are often willing to pay for college when the degree directly benefits the company. If you are considering going back to college to further your current career with a business-related degree, ask your employer for financial assistance. Many employers have this option available but do not openly advertise it.

Establish new connections

Whether you attend a traditional, campus-based university or an online school, you will get the chance to meet new people and establish new networks. This kind of networking not only facilitates new friendships, but also establishes more professional connections.

Learn about different cultures and languages

College lets you learn about things outside of your own realm of expertise. By taking the right electives, students can learn about different cultures and even learn different languages. These kinds of classes are not just enjoyable, but prepare the student for business in an internationally-rich world and increase employment potential.

Try something new

Regardless of whether you are studying something completely different from your current experiences or you are studying something that will further your career, going back to school will allow you to expand your horizons and try something new. Take interesting electives; enjoy the college experience. As Shakespeare puts it, "The world is your oyster."
