What You Need for Today’s Job Market Beyond a Degree

A college degree alone is no longer enough to impress an employer. With the amount of college-educated prospective employees in today's job market, students have to go that extra step in order to "strut their stuff" for their new employer.

Fortunately, colleges have recognized this competition and provide the resources necessary for students to get the attention they need on their resume. Here are some things you can do while attending college that will help bolster your chances for your dream career:

Clubs and Organizations

It is quintessential to join clubs and organizations in your school, especially those based on either academic performance or your job's field of expertise is quintessential for standing out from other job applicants.

It is important to establish a network of peers in college, through both your classmates and professors. Clubs and organizations can naturally help with this process. Distance learners are even able to network through the use of online discussion boards, chat rooms, and emails.

Studying Abroad

Students that study abroad are able to expose themselves to additional languages and cultures. This is crucial in today's international market and helps earn the student prestige when applying to a company that has invested interest in other cultures or marketing overseas.

Volunteer Work

Students that participate in volunteer work can add experience to their resume, getting around the loophole of "every job requires two years of experience." Volunteer work also gives students the rewarding experience of helping the community! Volunteer work is most often available from non-profit organizations.

Internship

Similar to volunteer work, the internship allows the student to get their feet wet in their major of study's field before jumping into their occupation. Internships can be used to gain college credit and act a valuable source of experience and references for the student's resume.
