How to Prepare for College

Going back to school can be an intimidating experience. Fortunately, preparing for going back to college is a simple matter of planning ahead. By following these five guidelines, you can rest assured that you have done everything to get ready for your college experience.

    1. Fulfill all of the requirements for financial aid. This includes filling out the FAFSA early, consulting a financial advisor at your future school, and applying for scholarships. When your FAFSA comes back, you will have to address paperwork for your grants, subsidized loans and any additional unsubsidized loans that might be needed.

    2. Fulfill all the requirements of your future educational institution. This includes applying to the school, providing any requested paperwork (previous transcripts, immunization records, etc.) and fulfilling any exams (SAT, ACT, etc.) the college or university requires.

    3. Discuss your college commitment with your family. Now that you have decided to go back to college, your family will have to support your endeavor by helping around the house and giving you time to study. Your family is a crucial support network for completing your degree.

    4. Discuss your college commitment with your employer. Your employer?s support as you try to further your future will be important as you work school into your schedule. Your employer may even help fund school.

    5. Make sure you have the supplies required for school. If you are attending an online school, your computer must be up-to-date and capable of supporting the technology used in your classes. If you are attending a campus, you will need basic supplies like paper and pen for note-taking (or a laptop). You also will have to purchase any books required for your courses.
